Here's the "scenic route" to get to the Finger Lakes that I used many times when I still lived in Conntempticut. If our friends from the east want to enjoy the roads getting here instead of being stuck on 17 (booooooring) all the way across, this is the way to do it.
Take the Taconic Parkway North out of the city to the exit for Route 23 West (at Martindale Depot) and follow it to Cortland. Lots of well maintained curvy, two and four lane roads with overlooks to the Catskills and vistas of farm country as you go West. From Cortland you can choose what part(s) of the Finger Lakes you want to see since you will be at the Southeast "corner" of them when you reach Cortland.
As Chairman Malcolm said; "It's not the destination, it's the trip."
